Local authorities in northeastern Badakhshan province of Afghanistan have said they fear that the landslide casualties could reach to around 2,500 people.
Provincial governor Shahwaliullah Adeeb said nearly 300 homes were buried under the soil and mud after following landslide in Argo district.
Mr. Adeeb further added that the area was hit by two landslides which took place in a time difference of one hour.
He said nearly 700 other homes which were at risk of landslide were evacuated and the Afghan security forces and rescue teams have given up the rescue and recovery operation.
According to Adeeb the operation was halted due to the risk of further landslide and lack of equipments.
Provincial police chief Fazaluddin Ayar said around 300 families were evacuated from the same village and they have been able to provide some food for the villagers.
Mr. Ayar called for immediate provision of first aid to the survivors of the incident.
